The LATEST NEWS from MoonDogEast:
7/18/07 - We here at MoonDogEast believe in updating the ol' website once a year whether it needs it or not, and as Miles once said, it's about that time - and a good thing too, because we've got some big news indeed.
If you've spent any time here, you know about Pseudophone; my collaboration with Peter K. - he of the Red Sun Soundroom. Well Pseudophone is pleased and proud to announce that our first collection of recorded pieces, titled “Reach,” was officially welcomed into the world today. “Reach” is being released by netlabel Negative Sound Institute (www.negativesoundinstitute.com).
You may have heard samples of these pieces on the Collaborations page. Now you can hear them in their entirety. The music on “Reach” is not easily categorized, but on the short-answer quiz some have called it “music for films that have yet to be made.”
As exciting as this news is, I am doubly thrilled because the tracks on Reach received help and encouragement from a personal hero of mine. Kevin Dooley, who records beautiful music of his own under the moniker of "ZerO-One" mastered these tracks for us and they sound absolutely GREAT! I am honored that Kevin, whose music I admire so much, was willing to add his skill, talent, and ears to our project.
You can visit our page at NSI and download "Reach" by clicking on: www.negativesoundiinstitute.com/pseudophone.php. There, you can download individual tracks or the whole collection (including liner notes and CD jewel case art) for FREE!!
Once you’ve got the tracks on your computer, you can listen to them there, you can burn them to a disc, you can put them on your IPod, you can use them as a soundtrack in your next feature film, the possibilities are endless!!
Our success in this netlabel thing depends on how many downloads we rack up early on. So I hope you’ll download the tunes and give them a try. Even if “Reach” turns out to not be your cup of tea, your support in the form of having downloaded the tracks will be greatly appreciated.
08/01/06 - Happy 64th, JG. We're still missing you mightily even after all this time.
07/28/06 - Yes, it has been a long time, hasn't it? Although things have been dormant here in virtual MoonDogEast space, it's been anything but quiet in the original 4D realm.
Just finished a wonderfully fun project with Cavanaugh and Kavanaugh. Dick and Deb came in on a couple of Saturdays earlier this month and recorded 3 original tunes for a demo disc that is already getting some airplay! This is some good ol' timey stuff recorded live "to tape" in one pass. You can hear some samples here. Special thanks to Peter K. for rock solid wingman support on this one.
Outside of the studio proper, the most exciting news is the pending launch of MoonDogEast's sister studio - Red Sun SoundRoom - in it's new location. Peter and I have been spending most Sundays lately racking gear, running and dressing cables, applying velcro, wrangling cable ties, measuring, leveling, geeking out in audio bliss, and generally having a great time. Peter is growing a wonderful creative space and I can't wait to be making music in it.
On the home gear geek front, I've been enjoying my honeymoon with my new Pigtronix EP-1 Envelope Phaser. Both my guitar and I are smiling a lot lately.
It was just a few evenings ago that Max and I witnessed a jaw-dropping performance by Tatsuya Nakatani at the Sanctuary for Independent Media. It was just a few days prior that Pete and I were talking about the importance of a performer's relationship with her or his instrument. Well, what Max and I saw was an artist whose relationship with his instrument is so intense and intimate that it almost felt inappropriate for the rest of us to be in the room.
Between Dick and Deb, work in the Soundroom, Mr. Nakatani's performance, and recent sonic excursions with the esteemed Dr. Robert, I've had lots of reminders this month about the power of music and the magic of making it.
08/01/05 - Major upgrades at MoonDogEast!! July saw the purchase of an Akai DPS 24 digital workstation. The DPS is the new hub of MoonDogEast. As you might guess from the name, this bad boy provides 24 tracks of 24-bit uncompressed recording, mixing, and editing at a variety of sample rates, as well as "flying faders" automation. The moving fader automation not only opens new vistas of mixdown flexibility, it drives the cats crazy! The DPS 24 also supports .wav file import and export, allowing MoonDogEast to communicate more efficiently with other studios' recording platforms.
Along with the new equipment, there have been major upgrades to the physical space as well. Our new control room configuration allows for more accurate monitoring while recording and mixing, provides a more comfortable workspace, and it just plain looks better. You can see it for yourself here.
There's also been a major upgrade in the ambience department with the purchase of a Visual Inspiration Enhancement Device, known to the non-technical world as a lava lamp. Let's hear it for garage sales!!
07/30/05 - Had the extreme pleasure of once again working with the honorable Carl Liss, setting up and running audio for the CD Release party of Bryan Thomas' Babylon, which also saw the world premiere of the video for the CD's title track. If you weren't there, you can find out what you missed from Bryan himself.
06/23/05 - Preproduction is underway for a second project with Dr. Craig Lennon. This one will explore guided imagery. Judging from our last project together, I'm guessing that I'll be learning a lot while I'm riding the faders.
06/19/05 - I cannot recommend highly enough the music of the Steve Kimock Band. Had the amazing good fortune to catch their show at Revolution Hall with Mssrs. E and T. Simply astonishing musicianship that left fellow Grenadier Mr. E and myself inspired to explore new directions in our music-making.
06/03/05 - Preproduction is underway for the second Pseudophone disc. The working title is "The Second Pseudophone Disc." Judging from the seeds and nuggets we've pulled together as fodder, there is some seriously good stuff that's gonna happen with this one. Shame on me for not mentioning before now that Pseudopone is no longer a long-distance affair. Back in April, fellow Pseudophonian Peter Konuito and the lovely Ms. M moved to the area, meaning that Pseudophone recording sessions no longer need to take place during rushed weekend visits or via file-trading. BTW, you really should follow that link to the Red Sun Soundroom site. There, you'll find that Mr. K's way with words rivals his wave-wrangling in the studio.
05/01/05 - A big month for musical birthdays: Judy Collins, Bing Crosby, Peter Gabriel, Pete Seeger, James Brown, Tammy Wynette, Johannes Brahms, P. I. Tchaikovsky, Bill Kreutzmann, Robert Johnson, Steve Winwood, Stevie Wonder, David Byrne, Brian Eno, Woody Herman, Billy Cobham, Taj Mahal, Rick Wakeman, Peter Townshend, Joe Cocker, Fats Waller, Richard Wagner, Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Levon Helm, John Fogerty, and Bryan Thomas. Oh yeah, my birthday also happens to fall in May. But the biggest May birthday of all belongs to the MoonDog behind MoonDogEast, James Maxwell Ebert, who also happens to be the best birthday present I ever got. Literally. Happy 14th birthday, son!
05/01/05 - Some more format transfer work this month, this time from vinyl. Still loving that old Bang & Olufsen.
04/11/05 - Something a little different this month. Some format transfer work for the New York State Defender's Association. I knew there was a reason to hold on to that cassette deck!
03/01/05 - Completed work on mixing of voice-over tracks for a video history project for Girlfriends, Inc. - the nation's oldest and most highly respected friendship-based social organization of African American women. Got to work with my friend Pat Zuber-Wilson and Tanisha Mallett of WTEN-TV news. A great experience for everybody!
01/06/05 - Pseudophone on the air!! "Walkabout," the first track from Pseudophone's "Reach" CD, was played by Bill Fox on his EMUSIC radio program. EMUSIC airs each Thursday at 11:00 pm on WDIY 88.1 FM (Allentown and Bethlehem, PA,) 93.9 FM (Easton, PA and Phillipsburg, NJ,) 92.9 FM on Service Electric Cable, and is webcast on the internet. Thanks Bill!!
01/01/05 - Happy New Year! may the coming months bring us all peace, good health, and happiness.
12/15/04 - At Dr. Lennon's request, MoonDogEast goes graphic! After seeing some noodling I was doing, Craig commissioned me to create the jewel case materials for "Mindfulness Meditation." Finished that today and everyone is happy.
